COONABARABRAN GIRL GUIDES CELEBRATED HARMONY DAY 2009
Coonabarabran Guides asked others to share the spirit of community harmony and celebrate Australia’s diversity when they visited Coonabarabran’s Woolworths’ Store from 11am – 1pm on Saturday 21 March 2009.
The Guides joined with local Woolworths staff to celebrate Harmony Day on 21 March and offering local residents the chance to take part in a community sausage sizzle and International food basket raffle.
‘Harmony Day and being a Guide is about fostering a sense of belonging for all Australians no matter where they come from, the languages they speak or the religions they follow’, said Lynne Price, Chief Commissioner for Girl Guides Australia.
‘Harmony Day gives our members and other young Australians the chance to learn more about the mix of languages and cultures in Coonabarabran.
Ms Price said ‘Girl Guideshave supported Harmony Day since 2000.This year there were 179Guide Units across the country taking part’.
Guides handed out Harmony Day badges and stickers and invite people to talk about their cultural experiences. Harmony Day, celebrated on 21 March each year, is part of the Australian Government’s Diversity Australia Program.As well as Harmony Day the Program includes annual grants from $5000 up to $50 000 for community relations programs and funding to respond to emerging issues of cultural, racial and religious intolerance.
